Observing Science Teaching

Setting

This example of professional development takes place in Clark County, Nevada. Due to its size and continuous growth, this district has a high demand for new teachers each year. It serves a large number of students from low socioeconomic levels and English language learners. The Mathematics and Science Enhancement Project provides professional development for K-5 teachers in the district in science and mathematics teaching and learning. One component of this project is teacher leadership. Teachers on Special Assignment such as Lori Fulton, the facilitator on this tape, and Lynn Dee Shay, the demonstration teacher, work with other teachers to deepen their understanding of the district’s elementary science curriculum.
