1. Instructional Focus:
Content areas/topics: Medical technology.
Process skills: Individualized instruction, modeling.
2. Target Population: Medical technicians in training for USAF reserves, both beginners and previously trained personnel preparing for re-certification.
3. Summary Description: The project will integrate voice recognition into an intelligent multimedia tutor. The tutor will parse the technicianÕs requests and questions as the technician analyzes samples. This will be the first time a true speech recognition interface is applied to an intelligent tutor. Speech recognition capabilities will allow the student to interact with the system in a natural way that simulates on-the-job experiences. The tutor will combine simulation and intelligent tutoring, which have been shown effective in the Advanced Cardiac Life Support system, recently developed by this performer, with speech recognition capabilities. The resulting tutor will train medical technicians by engaging them in situations similar to those they will be faced with in their jobs, and assisting them with non-intrusive advice and feedback. The system will ultimately provide distance learning via personal computers at any military base. It will also be available on-line in locations where Internet connection is possible.

9. Example(s) of the Use of this Product (Scenario): A medical technician in training is studying the technology of blood testing while on a business trip out of town. In the evening, at his hotel, he takes out his laptop and runs the tutor program. He is presented with a blood sample and asked to draw conclusions about it. He enters his conclusions, but finds that he is making assumptions that are not true. He is guided to the correct conclusions.
