California Building a Presence for Science (CABAP)
Key Leaders
Key Leaders will be chosen from County and District Offices of Education, science education and informal science organizations, businesses who play a key role in science education, and individual schools. A Key Leader is a person interested in serving in a leadership position to further science education in the K-12 system.
Key Leaders will:
- Participate in a one-day Key Leader training session. Trainings are held at different locations around the state, and at the CSTA Conference in October.
- Be registered electronically in the NSTA online system. Utilize the NSTA database for electronic communications with the CABAP leadership, other Key Leaders, and their Points of Contact. Disseminate information received via NSTAs electronic outreach system.
- Recruit/enlist PoCs from 20-30 local schools, and make sure they are registered in the NSTA online system.
- Either provide or assist in providing at least one local training targeted for PoCs.
- Receive $500 after completing their primary assignments (participate in a 1-day Key Leader training; have at least their minimum assigned number of Points of Contact (PoCs) registered in the NSTA database; and provide and document a local PoC training).
- Receive a certificate citing their role as a California/NSTA Building a Presence Key Leader.
- Receive and disseminate information and resources These will include materials developed through CABAP to assist teachers in providing high quality science instruction; electronic messages of interest to California science educators; quarterly issues of Focus magazine from the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse; other California and National curriculum and instruction guides; and 40 copies of the book Dr. Art's Guide to Planet Earth.
- Be encouraged and assisted to access the statewide online resources.
- Document their CABAP activities through the on-line system.
A Point of Contact is a classroom teacher who is an advocate and contact person for science education in his or her individual school building.
Each Point of Contact will:
- Register electronically in the NSTA database.
- Receive resources provided by the statewide leadership and their Key Leader.
- Disseminate to other teachers in their school the information/resources received through participating in CABAP.
- Be encouraged and assisted to participate in a local Building a Presence training.
- Be encouraged and assisted to access the statewide online resources.
