California, the largest and most populous state in our region, has nearly 80% of the Far West's total student population. As a "majority minority" state, California also stands out as having one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation. California students speak over 100 different languages; those students with limited proficiency in English constitute a quarter of the total school age population.
This large and dynamic state has a rich array of projects and institutions that provide services to improve mathematics and science education. However, for the state as a whole, and even within its regions, these efforts are often fragmented. Therefore, a special focus of WERC efforts in California is the fostering of local and statewide collaborations to better coordinate the work of mathematics and science education providers. WERC also works with environmental educators in California to help develop an effective infrastructure to support environmental education statewide. One such project is the development of an online Resource Directory for the CREEC (California Regional Environmental Education Coordinators) network.
In addition, we are expanding our EdGateway services to help gather and disseminate information and support collaborations on a statewide basis, and for local regions such as San Diego, Orange County and the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Building on this work, WERC will help coordinate a statewide collaboration with the Building A Presence project of the National Science Teachers Association.
