Absorption and Reflection of Solar EnergyThe student observes the effect that color has on the absorption of sunlight (Objective 2.learning cycle.)
Is Perpetual Motion Possible? Students will build a model which demonstrates energy conversions (from potential to kinetic to thermal) and will apply these conversions to develop an understanding of the law of conservation of energy. They will then be introduced to the idea of perpetual motion machines, attempt to design one of their own, and will explain why such machines do not work. Finally, they will relate the transfer of energy to Earth systems. (Objective 2. learning cycle, inquiry/experiment/investigation.)
Apple EnergyStudents will work in groups to evaluate the embodied energy and consumer benefits associated with five different apple products (home-grown apples, homemade applesauce, store-bought apples, store-bought jars of applesauce, and applesauce in "snack packs"). They will then be asked to create a poster advertising the benefits of one product when compared with the other four. (Objective 2. learning cycle.)
Let the Sunshine InStudents will conduct an experiment which demonstrates the absorption and reflection of sunlight by measuring the heat flow through various window coverings. (Objective 2. Experiment.)
