| Utah is a large, predominantly rural Western state. Unlike other states in the Far West, it has a comparatively homogeneous population. Approximately 90% of Utah's school age population is Anglo. For over eight years, WERC has collaborated with the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) to assist in implementing the state's systemic reform plans. Utah is unique in having grade-by-grade, criterion-referenced testing aligned to the state standards. The Utah work also profits from involving a robust network of stakeholders including the school districts and the higher education community. Our Utah work focuses on building a network of science teacher Learning Communities, and alignment of instruction and assessment with standards for math K-12.
