CA Math & Science
Resource Sites

California, the largest and most populous state in our region, has nearly 80% of the WestEd Region's total student population. This large and dynamic state has a rich array of projects and institutions that provide services to improve mathematics and science education. However, for the state as a whole and even within its regions, these efforts are often fragmented. Therefore, a special focus of WERC efforts in California has been the fostering of local and statewide collaborations to better coordinate the work of mathematics and science education providers. Examples are the San Diego Science Alliance, Project Tomorrow, and the California Science Education Advisory Committee.

In this "majority minority" state our school-based services focus on schools with large percentages of underserved students. The services include assisting districts and schools to:

  1. choose and implement materials to meet math and science standards;
  2. implement the new sixth grade Earth science course;
  3. teach elementary physical science (our Science Cases project);
  4. utilize our Science for Linguistic Inclusion services to help with language issues;
  5. implement Math 24 in schools throughout the state; and
  6. implement and expand the Equity in Science Education Project.

WERC works with environmental educators in California to help develop an effective infrastructure to support environmental education statewide. One project is the development of an online Resource Directory for the CREEC (California Regional Environmental Education Coordinators) network.
