Dilemmas in Professional Development: A Case-based Approach to Improving Practice

Edited by Tania Madfes and Judy Shulman

The work of the professional developer involves interacting with teachers, administrators, volunteers, discipline experts, and members of one's own staff, whether they are peers, supervisors, or subordinates. The various quandaries described in Dilemmas in Professional Development arise during those interactions. Each case in the collection provides an opportunity to examine a number of issues as they occur in the real world of teacher development. The questions posed by the eight authors deal with relationships, personalities, instructional strategies, equity, workshop delivery and follow-up, and program administration and support. The book includes eight cases with facilitator notes and a section providing guidance for facilitators.
