Technology in Education

Promoting and Supporting technology in education

Books, pencils and paper, crayons and chalk, creaky movie projectors - such were the tools of education throughout much of this century. Now, well into the "information age" and almost into the 21st century, most students and educators realize that those tools alone don't suffice to serve their teaching and learning needs. Yet the growing array of increasingly high tech tools proffered to them- from computers and compact discs to interactive video and e-mail, from LANs and WANs to television - can be confusing.

What might such tools truly offer for educators and students? How can they be used to change key aspects of the teaching and learning environment? When and why might one technology be more helpful than another? Is high tech always better than low tech? When is a particular technology worth the investment - and what is that investment? How will technology change the way schooling is delivered in the future? These are some of the questions with which the education community is grappling and, as such, they drive the work of WestEd's Technology in Education program.

The program was established to explore and support the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning, both in general and in the context of a particular school, district or education system. Our staff provides a range of facilitation services, training, technical assistance and information resources that address the technology and electronic information needs of classrooms, school districts, county offices of education, postsecondary institutions and state education agencies.
