Formative Assessment: New Professional Development Resources
Posted on
Now that teachers have new standards and assessments, what are the building blocks for helping students succeed on the new tests?
As part of the Building Educator Assessment Literacy (BEAL) project, WestEd and SCALE staff created online courses to help teachers design and implement curriculum-embedded performance tasks in English language arts and mathematics. These tasks are designed to surface student learning and allow teachers to make adjustments to instruction throughout the school year.
The resources from these online courses are now available as two Raising the Bar on Instruction collections, each including five videos that follow a teacher and a coach as they work through the formative assessment process. The two collections are:
- Curriculum-Embedded Performance Task in English Language Arts: Evidence and Elaboration
- Curriculum-Embedded Performance Task in Mathematics: Rate and Linearity
Read Jessica Arnold’s Raising the Bar blog post, “Helping Students Stay on the Path to Mastery: Formative Assessment PD Resources From BEAL.” In addition to describing each resource collection, Arnold offers tips on how teachers can use the videos for professional development.
