Superintendents are charged with planning for and facilitating continuous improvement; however, developing, implementing, and measuring the impact of improvement initiatives can be challenging.

Tran Keys, Joseph Sassone, and Terry Hofer from WestEd’s Comprehensive School Assistance Program led a recent workshop for New York superintendents that discussed using systems thinking to improve student outcomes.

The workshop explored:

  • The concept of organizational learning
  • The components of an organizational learning system
  • How improvement science leads to continuous improvement

In addition, superintendents broke into small group teams to investigate and share insights about problems facing their districts that could benefit from an improvement-science approach.
