Upcoming QTEL Summer Institutes: Q&A, Part I

Professional development at a QTEL workshop

This post was written by Nicholas Catechis, Senior Program Associate, Teacher Professional Development Program at WestEd.

This is the first in a series of blog posts describing what participants will experience during this summer’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) professional learning institutes, which will take place in San Francisco, California from July 16-27, and in San Antonio, Texas from July 23-27. What is the purpose of the QTEL Summer Institutes, and why should I attend?

The QTEL Summer Institutes offer a unique opportunity for educators to come together and build their understanding and expertise around quality teaching for English learners. Whether you come as an individual or as part of a team from a school or district, you will collaborate and share ideas with other participants.

Our institutes model with educators the kinds of practices that they can implement with their students. For example, they will learn how to develop questions that can carefully guide students’ reading of a text, and structure group interactions so they can compare and discuss their answers. We believe that educators, just like students, bring with them an immense potential, and we want to develop that potential in deep, accelerated, and very solid ways.

Can you tell me more about the Institute activities?

Our participants are invited to engage in activities that support their students’ learning, to think about activity design and activity implementation, and then to reflect on how an activity works. For example, after participating in a jigsaw activity, participants examine the texts used as well as the steps within the activity and how these steps foster quality interactions among students.

All of this is done best in a collaborative environment where participants feel appreciated and supported, can focus without distraction, discuss ideas, reflect on them, build plans together, and enjoy a true spirit of collegiality.
