Candice Bocala

Candice Bocala is a Senior Research Associate at Learning Innovations at WestEd, where she contributes to projects about data use in education; educator evaluation systems; professional development; and special education programs and policies.

Bocala has focused on work related to systems change, school improvement, and professional development through research and technical assistance.

Her work with the Institute of Education Sciences-funded Regional Educational Laboratory, Northeast & Islands includes studying the connection between teacher evaluation and professional development in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Bocala has designed workshops for educators in the Northeast on creating a culture of data use and helping practitioners use inquiry cycles to examine and apply conclusions from data to instruction and improvement.

In addition, Bocala provides technical assistance for the Office of Special Education Programs-funded IDEA Data Center, which works with state agencies to ensure high-quality data systems in special education.

Bocala serves as a state liaison for Vermont, Maine, and Iowa, and she contributes to the Assessment Tools and Products Workgroup focused on performance assessment indicators for students with disabilities.

Previously, Bocala taught elementary school in Washington, DC. She was also an adjunct lecturer at American University and a member of the Data Wise Project and the Strategic Education Research Partnership at Harvard University.

Bocala received a BA in government from Cornell University; MA in policy analysis and evaluation from Stanford University; MAT in elementary education from American University; and EdD in educational policy, leadership, and instructional practice from Harvard Graduate School of Education.
