Chris Thorn

Senior Associate, Director of Knowledge Management

Chris Thorn is Director of Knowledge Management for the Carnegie Math Pathways, a network of faculty members, researchers, designers, students, and content experts committed to increase student success in developmental mathematics and overall college and career outcomes. Thorn oversees network organization and knowledge management for the Carnegie Math Pathways. In that capacity, he is responsible for managing the socio-technical infrastructure of the network as well as measurement and analytics. Prior to joining WestEd, Thorn worked at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, where he directed the Advancing Teaching – Improving Learning (ATIL) program; and developed Carnegie's Center for Networked Improvement. Previously, Thorn worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin Center for Education Research. His work there focused on identifying and addressing organizational and technical gaps in information systems in education, the selection and use of multiple measures of educational effectiveness, and the design and implementation of decision support systems at the state, district, and school levels. Thorn also had both research and hands-on experience with the increasingly complex data requirements of education reform efforts. Thorn received a BA in economics and German language from Indiana University; MA in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; MA in international relations from The Johns Hopkins University, Nitze School of Advanced International Studies; and doctorate in sociology from the University of Bielefeld, Germany.
