Jan Anderson

Jan Anderson is a Senior Research Associate.

Anderson is a member of the agency’s Mid-Atlantic Comprehensive Center, where she maintains contact with senior education officials in Delaware and New Jersey. She also helps the Center provide services to build their agencies’ capacity to strengthen the educator workforce, improve instructional practices around the Common Core Standards, and use new assessments to measure student performance.

Anderson also coordinates the technical assistance provided to the two states, the evaluation and revision of those services, and the Center’s outreach and communication vehicles.

Prior to joining WestEd, Anderson worked at the U.S. Department of Education, where she led the development of model science, geography, history, civics, and arts standards that became the basis of numerous state and local programming upgrades.

Anderson designed and oversaw multi-year evaluation studies of federal programs to offer better information to Congress and the Executive Branch. She also served at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, directing funds to arts organizations that were breaking new ground or increasing access to high-quality programming.

In addition, Anderson served as education aide for the Governor of Missouri, assisting local educators with programs such as Parents as First Teachers to better support the state’s families and students.

Anderson also managed outreach and federal contracts for the nation’s only private provider of public library services, often in communities facing closure of their libraries due to dire economic conditions.
