Mardi Gale

Senior Research Associate

After spending 20 years in classrooms K-12, Mardi Gale came to WestEd in 1992 as a Regional Director for the Mathematics Renaissance Middle Grades and K-12 initiatives, funded by the National Science Foundation.  These initiatives worked with schools for systemic change, to build capacity, and improve mathematics instruction. In addition, Gale was an Associate Director for the Mathematics Renaissance Leadership Alliance, designing professional development and working with districts to develop leadership teams. She was a member of the evaluation team for the California Mathematics Professional Development Institutes, and conducted academic audits, under the direction of WestEd’s Comprehensive School Assistance Program. Gale is the primary author of Aim for Algebra™, a mathematics curriculum available through It's About Time, and designs and delivers professional development for the program. She has also written middle school mathematics curricula and worked on early efforts to create a curriculum for CCSS-M. Gale coauthored WestEd's Making Mathematics Accessible to English Learners: A Guidebook for Teachers.  She also coauthored Common Core for Mathematics in a PLC at Work, Grades 6-8, published by Solution Tree. She participated in initial efforts to bring performance-based assessment to schools, as a member of the Mathematics Development Team for the California Assessment Program. She participated in norm setting for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and was part of the design team for the first conferences of the New Standards Project. Gale has designed and facilitated professional development, including coaching for middle and high schools, focusing on instructional strategies and content, in alignment with the CCSS-M. She also facilitates online professional development.
