Drawing on three decades of teaching and administrative experience, Nicholas Catechis promotes the academic success of students designated as English Learners. As part of the Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) team, Catechis provides in-school coaching and professional development that builds teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge.
His expertise includes developing and implementing research-based instructional materials and workshops that help teachers deliver high-quality instruction aligned with the state standards. He also provides individualized coaching and modeling of lessons and other activities for educators of linguistically and culturally diverse student populations.
Catechis has presented at national and international conferences focused on English Learners and has co-authored a book chapter in Amplifying the Curriculum: Designing Learning Opportunities for English Learners.
Prior to joining WestEd, Catechis served in the New York City Department of Education as an English as a Second Language teacher, an assistant principal, and a school district administrator. In all these roles, he facilitated the implementation of high-quality, research-based initiatives for English Learners.
Catechis holds an MA in educational administration from New York University.
