Region IX Equity Assistance Center at WestEd

The Region IX Equity Assistance Center (EAC) at WestEd is one of ten EACs funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide technical assistance and training in the areas of civil rights, equity, and school reform.

Serving schools and communities in Arizona, California, and Nevada, the Region IX EAC at WestEd ensures that equitable education opportunities are available and accessible for all children.

Key Areas of Work

We offer services addressing the following areas:

High-Quality Instruction

  • Improving academic language development for English learners and other students
  • Improving the recruitment, retention, and distribution of high-quality teachers

College and Career Readiness

  • Improving and increasing opportunities for underserved students to have access to and to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) courses
  • Improving teachers’ STEM content knowledge through professional development

Safe and Supportive School Environments

  • Using climate data for school improvement
  • Improving community and parent engagement

Our Clients

We work with schools, local education agencies, local school boards, state education agencies, other responsible government agencies, parents, and community-based organizations in Arizona, California, and Nevada.

Services to Clients

In response to requests, we provide our clients with:

  • Customized technical assistance
  • Site-based professional development and training
  • Webinars and other web-based professional development and dissemination services

The EAC at WestEd also helps clients:

  • Eliminate discrimination
  • Reduce bullying, harassment, and violence
  • Reduce disproportionality in special education
  • Tackle other issues related to improving equity and access in public schools

Collaboration Across the Region

The Region IX EAC at WestEd collaborates with other centers, agencies, and experts to leverage resources on equity for the benefit of the region. These include other federally funded assistance centers that serve Region IX, such as the Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West), the California Comprehensive Center, the Southwest Comprehensive Center, and the Mountain Plains and Western Regional Resource Centers.


In addition to having served previously as an EAC, WestEd has also been one of the Desegregation Centers, the forerunners of the EACs. WestEd has a long history of acting to ensure equity in access and opportunity for all students, regardless of race, gender, or national origin.
