The Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast & Islands (REL-NEI) is part of the Regional Educational Laboratory Program.
REL-NEI is administered by Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), in close partnership with American Institutes of Research (AIR) and Learning Innovations (LI) at WestEd.
REL-NEI helps preK-16 educators at the state, district and school levels increase their use of scientifically based evidence to make decisions that lead to improved student achievement and reduce performance gaps among student groups.
LI is WestEd’s northeast program and a partner in the REL-NEI focusing on needs assessment; outreach to stakeholders, including state departments of education; and, producing fast response projects in a variety of content areas.
LI’s Issues and Answers Report, Impact of Benchmark Assessments Aligned to State Standards on Middle School Mathematics, is an example of a fast response project on assessment models.
Other areas of research include teacher quality and preparation, professional development, data analysis and use, English learners, students with disabilities, leadership, and improving learning in science and mathematics.
REL-NEI serves the six New England states, New York, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The region includes over 5 million students, nearly 10,000 schools, and 2,000 districts.
