On Tuesday, January 30 (10am, Eastern Time), the House Committee on Education and the Workforce will hold a hearing entitled, “Protecting Privacy, Promoting Policy: Evidence-Based Policymaking and the Future of Education.” The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

During the hearing, members will examine federal policies that affect education research and student privacy. Innovation Studies Co-Director Neal Finkelstein is one of four panel members presenting to the committee. In his testimony, Finkelstein will share some of his experiences as a researcher and will discuss the mechanics of conducting high-quality research to build evidence in the field. His testimony will also highlight the role that the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) program has played in developing partnerships with the field to conduct and use research.

Members and witnesses will also discuss how education research is used, how states and districts can protect student privacy while conducting education research, and what improvements can be made to update and strengthen federal policies (e.g., the Education Sciences Reform Act) in these areas.
