CenterView: “Out-Of-Field” Teaching Assignments
Data show that 20 percent of high school physical science teachers have a credential in subject matter other than physical science and that the practice of assigning teachers out-of-field is widespread across all high schools in California.
This issue of CenterView, developed by the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning at WestEd, takes a look at out-of-field teaching, examining how it happens and its impact on California’s high schools.
It argues that only teachers who know their subject matter and have the instructional skills to deliver that content effectively should teach students, and presents policymakers with four approaches to solving this issue.
