English Learners in STEM Subjects: Transforming Classrooms, Schools, and Lives examines the research on English language learners’ learning, teaching, and assessment to help guide improvements in the educational system, through:

• Improved assessments and assessment practices
• Reporting and classification
• Improved instruction that recognizes the central role that content area instruction plays in children’s language development and content area achievement
• Leveraging connections to home, culture, and school
• Better preparation of teachers and administrators
• The establishment of federal, state, and local policies that will build and sustain capacity of school systems to allow all English language learners to reach their full potential as STEM learners

This National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Consensus Study Report considers the complex social and academic use of language delineated in the new mathematics and science standards, the diversity of the population of English language learners, and the integration of English as a second language instruction with core instructional programs in STEM.
