Star Navigation Curriculum Kit: Explorations into Angles and Measurement
The mathematics in this module is based on the knowledge of Yup’ik Eskimo elder and expert star navigator, Frederick George. As students learn about navigation from Frederick, they also learn the associated math concepts of angles and measurements through activities as well as related stories that connect math to real experiences. The kit includes the teacher’s curriculum, The Star Navigation Reader, two posters, and Yup’ik glossary on CD-ROM.
Star Navigation: Explorations into Angles and Measurement is part of the Math in a Cultural Context series, a supplemental math curriculum based on the traditional wisdom and practices of the Yup’ik Eskimo people of southwest Alaska.
