Over a five-year period, more than 1,900 teachers and 600,000 students in five states participated in Reading Apprenticeship, WestEd’s signature approach to improving secondary school literacy.

Evaluations of this scale-up effort indicate the approach’s positive impact and have generated lessons on how to effectively reach large numbers of schools, teachers, and students.

Among key elements of the scale-up were teacher leaders supporting Reading Apprenticeship from within schools; well-structured, multifaceted professional learning spread through the year; and integrated support at national, state, and local levels.
