As part of efforts to promote an evidence-based crime prevention agenda, Public Safety Canada is exploring the feasibility of developing a Canadian-specific system for rating the efficacy of programs which considers a variety of evaluation methods and designs. Such a system is referred to as an “evidence-based registry.”

To assist Public Safety Canada in this work, WestEd’s Justice & Prevention Research Center conducted a review of four prominent and internationally recognized evidence-based registries in the United States.

The questions guiding the review covered:

  • How the registry is funded
  • Types of evaluation designs used to rate program effectiveness
  • Whether or not qualitative/non-experimental/mixed-methods studies were considered in the development of the registry
  • How potentially eligible evaluations are identified
