English Learners with Disabilities: Challenges, Strategies, and Tools for Inclusive Classrooms


This two-day institute will provide classroom teachers, administrators, and support personnel with the opportunity to learn about the research and unique needs of English learners with disabilities (ELSWD), and how to better incorporate effective instructional strategies into their daily Tier I instructional planning.

During the institute, participants will examine and apply researched-based instructional strategies and techniques that address a diverse range of learning needs, and gain practical knowledge on how to collaborate in order to “tune” or plan lessons to increase accessibility to grade level content for diverse learners.

Participants will:

  • Identify the differences between learning challenges caused by language acquisition deficits and learning disabilities
  • Review state guidance and policies regarding English learners with disabilities
  • Examine and apply research-based strategies and techniques that address a diverse range of learning needs including:
  • Universal Design for Learning
  • Critical role of academic discourse and tools to increase structured student interaction
  • Scaffolding techniques that address a diverse range of learning needs in instructional planning
  • Match language proficiency levels with appropriate levels of scaffolding
  • Practice working collaboratively using a Backwards Lesson Planning Tool to refine and/or plan a lesson specifically for ELSWD

The fee of $589 includes the cost of the two-day institute and lunch for both days.
