Register: K-12 Alliance and California NGSS Collaborative Online Professional Development, July 2020

In collaboration with the California Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Collaborative, WestEd’s K-12 Alliance will offer online summer institutes designed to enhance teacher knowledge of 3-dimensional science content, strengthen pedagogical techniques, assess the progression of student learner mindsets, and engage school leaders in collective efforts to provide standards-aligned science education to all students. The K-12 Alliance is recognized in California statewide as a premier professional development initiative for implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Elementary NGSS Online Professional Development

This three-day institute hosted by the K-12 Alliance and the CA NGSS Collaborative will focus on standards-aligned science content for grades K-5. The institute is presented by a Cadre (scientist and CA NGSS teacher leader) and addresses the use of phenomena, and 3-dimensional sense-making through student-centered lesson design. The virtual institute will include both synchronous and asynchronous learning over the three days.

What You Will Learn:

  • Design physical science units for your grade level that align with NGSS standards and help develop crucial reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Key pedagogical routines that enrich student-centered instruction
  • How to integrate literacy into science learning experiences
  • Science content that forms the basis of the learning

Who Should Attend?

  • Elementary teachers, teacher leaders and coaches
  • School and district teams of two or more

What You Will Learn:

  • Deepen your understanding of climate science and high-quality instructional content
  • Model the use of climate-related phenomena in high school classroom instruction recommended by the three course model described in the California Science Framework: The Living Earth, Chemistry of the Earth, and Physics of the Universe
  • Participate in breakouts for biology, chemistry, and physics teachers, with opportunities for elective teachers (e.g. environmental science, oceanography, etc.)

Who Should Attend?

  • High school teachers, teacher leaders and coaches
  • School and district teams of two or more

Dates: July 27-29, 2020
