Literacy Practices That Support Multilingual Student Success Across Content Areas

Multilingual student success webinar

What does it take to support multilingual student success in reading, writing, and communicating in science, social studies, and math? Join us for this 30-minute webinar where we’ll explore four practices that support student language identity and skills and academic success in the disciplines.

Date: Thursday, August 7, 2025

Time: 12–12:30 p.m. PT

Developing disciplinary literacy equips students with the skills to deeply engage with content area knowledge. When educators use strategies known to support multilingual students, they can engage and support all students in more meaningfully engaging ways across disciplines. This webinar explores how literacy practices can serve as powerful tools to engage all students, especially multilingual students, in meaningful disciplinary learning.

In this session, you will learn about four practical ways to support multilingual students’ success with disciplinary literacy; these practices can be used in a variety of settings. With particular attention to the ways in which these practices might work for newcomer students, participants will learn how to

  • engage both multilingual and monolingual students in translanguaging,
  • make the key functions and structures of language visible in classroom instruction,
  • use high-quality instructional materials and assets-based pedagogical practices, and
  • facilitate disciplinary discourse to encourage the development of disciplinary literacy in their classrooms.
