Reading Apprenticeship 2025

Explore WestEd’s 2025 Reading Apprenticeship, Writing Apprenticeship (New), and College Writing events designed to build on your foundational knowledge and enhance your classroom practice. These institutes are geared toward middle school, high school, and college educators, administrators, coaches, and instructional support personnel. You have the option to choose from online, asynchronous courses or in-person immersive institutes—each offering targeted learning opportunities to deepen your expertise.

You have the option to join Reading Apprenticeship in-person in San Francisco, CA, Livonia, MI, Asheville, NC, as well as online. The courses offered include: Reading Apprenticeship 101, Writing Apprenticeship (New), College Writing, Essentials I, and Essentials II.

Course Descriptions

  • Reading Apprenticeship 101 gives an introduction to the Reading Apprenticeship Framework provides a strong foundation in the four key dimensions of learning—social, personal, cognitive, and knowledge-building. Participants will explore metacognitive conversations to enhance student motivation and achievement. Designed for educators across disciplines, the course focuses on improving reading strategies for complex texts, supporting students’ persistence and problem-solving, and fostering literacy development.
  • Essentials I provides a comprehensive introduction to the Reading Apprenticeship framework, helping educators create a positive learning environment that emphasizes student strengths and engagement with texts. The course covers all four dimensions of the framework (social, personal, cognitive, and knowledge-building) and offers strategies for integrating reading into content areas. Educators will learn how to engage students in metacognitive practices, develop persistence, and design lessons that improve literacy.
  • Essentials II builds upon the foundational knowledge of Reading Apprenticeship from Essentials I. This Phase 2 course delves deeper into cognitive and knowledge-building routines, with a focus on metacognitive conversation. It is designed for middle, high school, and college educators, providing strategies to help students engage with disciplinary texts and enhance their reasoning. Participants will learn to support students in summarizing, analyzing, and discussing complex information while using visuals to improve comprehension. This course requires completion of a Phase 1 course as a prerequisite.
  • Writing Apprenticeship (New) is designed for middle and high school English Language Arts and History/Social Studies educators. It aims to transform writing instruction by focusing on innovative writing, thinking, and reasoning practices. The program emphasizes discipline-specific writing strategies, helping teachers model writing skills and build students’ confidence in literacy. By engaging students in the writing process, participants will learn how to support student growth through personalized writing strategies, strengthening their students’ ability to think and write critically in the humanities.
  • College Writing builds on the foundational principles of Reading Apprenticeship, this course specifically addresses the teaching of writing in higher education. Participants will learn how to integrate metacognitive conversations with writing instruction, explore the history of writing studies, and build a supportive improvement community. The course focuses on transfer-level writing courses, threshold concepts in writing, and strategies for teaching writing in digital and new media contexts. To enroll, participants must have completed the Phase 1 Reading Apprenticeship course.
