Advancing Literacy

NARRATOR

Literacy is the foundation for learning across every subject and throughout every stage of life. At WestEd, we are committed to supporting thriving learners and empowered communities by strengthening literacy instruction to ensure that all learners develop the skills they need to thrive in school, work, and beyond.

Our work in literacy is grounded in the belief that effective teaching, informed by research and shaped by practical expertise, leads to better outcomes for students. That’s why we partner with schools, districts, states, and post-secondary institutions to equip educators with high quality, evidence-based professional learning, research, and technical assistance, delivering real results when they matter most, in classrooms.

Reading Apprenticeship, our flagship literacy program, strengthens teaching skills to better support students learn high level literacy skills across the content areas. From middle school through college, Reading Apprenticeship has improved both teacher confidence and student achievement at scale.

If you want something that truly builds capacity across your school and district, not just literacy coaches or ELA teachers, but for every content area, Reading Apprenticeship is the way to go. First of all, it was very practical, very easy to pick up from a teaching perspective. The way the professional learning was done was really excellent, it’s research-based and respects both the teacher expertise and student voice, so it really does a lot.

Our new Writing Apprenticeship builds on the success of Reading Apprenticeship to engage students in new ways of writing, thinking, talking, and reasoning across the content areas. We provide transformative, professional learning and technical assistance alongside rigorous research and evaluation services that help education leaders understand what works across all ages and stages.

Our experts conduct evaluations that assess the effectiveness of literacy programs and guide decision-making at every level. Whether you are focused on early reading achievement, implementing literacy legislation, learning in multiple languages, or sustaining literacy initiatives, our work is grounded in evidence and focused on impact. Through our research and partnerships, we continue to shape literacy practices by supporting educators, informing leaders, and advancing literacy and learning for students everywhere.
