(Past Event) Register for Early Language and Literacy Learning Summer Institute – Grades TK-1, June 24–28, Sacramento, California

Leading with Learning

In this five-day intensive summer institute, teachers learn how to support young children’s early language and literacy development, with a particular focus on young English language learners.

The institute focuses on five critical areas in early language and literacy development:

  • Foundational reading skills – phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency
  • Teacher read alouds using complex and culturally relevant storybooks
  • Student-to-student text-based discussions
  • Scaffolding for early academic writing
  • Academic language development, including vocabulary and syntax

The institute expands teachers’ abilities to successfully enact California’s ELA Standards, ELD Standards, and ELA/ELD Framework.

Teachers will learn how to implement a well-rounded early language and literacy approach that ensures young children develop both foundational reading skills and early academic language and literacy, both of which are essential for a strong start in school.

School and district teams are highly encouraged to participate together in the institute for optimal learning and successful post-institute implementation.

Three reunion days are scheduled for continuing learning — one day in the fall, one in the winter, and one in the spring. In addition, more intensive school-site follow-up coaching is available.
