Chronic absence, which is a sign of disengagement from school, rose to 29.7% in 2021–22 for all students. Chronic absence rates climbed significantly for student groups that have experienced disproportionate outcomes.
What are schools and community-based organizations doing to increase family engagement and student connectedness to create pathways to re-engagement?
Join Western Educational Equity Assistance Center (WEEAC) and Attendance Works as we spotlight strategies that leverage the crucial summer months to re-engage students and families and make sure they are welcomed at the beginning of the school year.
This session is designed specifically for participants who are serving in the following roles: school, district, local education agency, tribal, local, county, state, and federal agency personnel, advisory, board, and council members.
Participants will:
- Identify key opportunities for engagement during the summer months
- Use chronic absence data to inform re-engagement of students who are disproportionately impacted (kindergarten, African American, Latino/a/x students, newcomers)
- Identify reasons why students are disengaged
- Learn from practitioners about what works in different settings to engage/re-engage families and students
