As Vice President of Human Resources at WestEd, Steve Mitchell oversees the agency’s employment practices, employee relations, compensation, and benefits.
His work ensures that each staff member is provided opportunities and challenged to reach his or her highest potential, resulting in maximum productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction.
Under Mitchell’s leadership, the Human Resources department helps to maintain and promote a team-oriented work environment that fosters diversity within an atmosphere of mutual respect, fairness, caring, and trust.
Mitchell is an accomplished executive, combining both human resources and operations expertise to help optimize organizational performance. He has a proven ability to reach effective solutions to complex issues and successfully implement organizational change in both small and large organizations.

Mitchell has worked in a number of industries including wireless, software development, semiconductor, and building services. His roles have ranged from human resources leader to Chief Executive Officer.
While at American Building Maintenance, Mitchell restructured the billing process that increased receivables and lowered customer complaints. At Nextel, he led the staffing process for a three-company merger that impacted over 4,000 employees.
Mitchell is on the Board of Directors for Downs Community Development Corporation, an Oakland, California-based nonprofit agency focused on feeding, housing, and education.
He received a BA in English from California State University, Hayward.
