Identifying Connections Between Science Learning and Mathematics Education
Given novel and extreme global challenges, students need to be prepared to be innovative problem-solvers and thinkers. These challenges will not have simple solutions and will require cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge of mathematics and science.
Integrated math and science instruction can potentially boost attitudes about, interest in, and achievement in STEM—particularly for historically underrepresented and minority students. This brief highlights the benefits of integrating mathematics and science in education and provides guidance on how to do so, including examples of what integrated instruction looks like in practice, strategies for promoting this integration, and information about challenges to integration.
Education policymakers and leaders can use this brief’s findings and conclusions to support systemwide integrated instruction.
Strategies that promote integrated instruction and that support teachers and students:
- Provide opportunities for teacher peer observation and learning.
- Offer models of integrated instruction.
- Dedicate time for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Use other disciplines as context.
- Clarify the purpose of lessons.
