This report analyzes early literacy screening data from Massachusetts for the 2023/24 school year, covering about half of the state’s K–3 students. It highlights persistent disparities in literacy performance among student groups, with roughly 25–30 percent of students identified as significantly below benchmark multiple times during the year—especially those from low-income backgrounds, English Learners, and students receiving special education services. 

The data show that early literacy risk often persists across the school year and grade levels, emphasizing the need for early, targeted interventions. Overall, while universal screening provides valuable insights, current interventions have not fully addressed persistent literacy challenges, underscoring the need for stronger supports and continued research on effective practices.
