This report presents findings from a randomized controlled trial examining the impact of NBA Math Hoops on student math achievement, contributing to the growing evidence base for math acceleration programs outside the school day.
This study offers school and district administrators and math education researchers rigorous evidence on a program already used by thousands of educators across the country, often in out-of-school-time settings. Key findings show that students in NBA Math Hoops classrooms scored an average of 0.19 standard deviations higher than peers in STEM enrichment classrooms — the equivalent of moving from the 50th to the 58th percentile. The study also found the program to be both easy to implement, requiring just three hours of training and free materials, and cost-effective, with an investment of less than $20 per student beyond standard programming costs.
