California has invested significantly in teacher residency pathways, which have the potential to diversify the teaching force and reduce teacher shortages. SRTAC was established in 2023 to support leaders and participants in California residency programs, including grantees of the California Teacher Residency Grant Program, by offering tailored, differentiated technical assistance to residency programs across the state.
Purpose
WestEd partners with the Santa Clara County Office of Education, which leads SRTAC, to conduct an external, formative evaluation of SRTAC. This evaluation focuses on three key areas: (a) collecting data and evidence to understand the development and effectiveness of SRTAC, (b) measuring SRTAC’s progress against its theory of action and needs emerging from the field, and (c) working collaboratively with program leaders to interpret evaluation findings. The findings will be used to inform reporting to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), state leaders, and the policy community to help refine the program.
Audiences Served
The evaluation supports SRTAC leaders in refining their program and making midcourse corrections, offers timely information to state agencies and leaders about the implementation of SRTAC, and highlights learning about this new model of residency TA for the broader policy community.
Project Activities
The evaluation draws on mixed-methods data sources to understand the development, implementation, and impact of SRTAC. In addition to collecting original data through interviews and surveys, we also leverage existing data on completion, hiring, and retention of California residents, as well as other available teacher workforce data as needed.
