Accelerating Writing for English Learners During Distance Learning Institute

In this four-module learning series, participants will learn how to accelerate writing in distance learning environments. The professional learning focuses on the following for distance learning settings:

  • Oral language development as a pathway to writing
  • Written language development
  • Scaffolding instruction for equitable access
  • Formative assessment for oral and written language development

Who Will Benefit

  • Educators of English Learners including teachers, teacher leaders, and instructional coaches
  • School and district teams are highly encouraged to participate together in the series for optimal learning and successful implementation

Outcomes

After this course, participants will be able to:

  • Provide and facilitate opportunities for students to listen, speak, and read, in ways that lead to writing
  • Plan and scaffold writing instruction that maximizes language development
  • Gather evidence of where students are in their oral and written language development

All modules require substantive participant engagement and reflection in three parts:

  • Phase 1: Preparation. Participants will engage in theoretical readings, video analyses, and online discussions about major themes of each module in order to prepare them for a live session.
  • Phase 2: Live Session. Participants will engage in synchronous activities from a student’s perspective as they experience how the themes introduced in phase 1 can be translated into powerful learning experiences.
  • Phase 3: Application and reflection. Drawing upon experiences from the live session, participants engage in deep analysis of ideas, tasks, and pedagogical moves found in the exemplar lesson. Subsequently, they will reflect on the entire module and plan ways they can implement the notions presented.
