Overview
Amaal Awadalla brings more than 27 years of experience in supporting K–12 systems through leadership development, literacy improvement, and large-scale systems change. Her work is grounded in supporting education leaders in turning complex initiatives into coherent, sustainable practices that improve teaching and learning for all students. As a senior state technical assistance specialist with the Education Systems team, Awadalla partners with states, districts, and schools to build leadership capacity; strengthen instructional quality; and drive meaningful, lasting impact.
Awadalla designs and delivers evidence-based technical assistance and professional learning for state and local education agencies. Her projects span multiple states and focus on leadership coaching, development of comprehensive literacy plans, curriculum alignment, and implementation monitoring. Through this work, leaders have strengthened instructional coherence; improved literacy outcomes; and built systems that support consistent, high-quality practice at scale.
Prior to joining WestEd, Awadalla served as an assistant superintendent and in regional leadership roles in which she led districtwide curriculum and assessment systems, implemented comprehensive K–12 literacy plans, and designed professional learning structures for educators and leaders. She also taught and led professional learning at the state and national levels, including work in adolescent literacy and leadership preparation. These experiences continue to shape her commitment to bridging research, policy, and practice so leaders are equipped to sustain improvement over time.
