Many districts are adopting high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) for science, a critical step toward stronger student outcomes. But strong materials alone are not enough. Teachers need robust, sustained support to shift their instructional practices and use those materials effectively.
This infographic from WestEd, a collaboration between the K–12 Alliance and SCALE Science, shows how state and district leaders can build the sustained supports that make science HQIM work. Drawing on the New Mexico Building Science Leaders Network, it shows how tools like the Framework for Supporting Student Sensemaking anchor efforts toward shared, research-driven goals; why planning needs diverse stakeholder perspectives; and how strengthening leaders’ capacity in science also improves their support for mathematics and English language arts (ELA).
