A-GAME (Assess: Global access, Academics, Mission, and Equity): Measure What Matters, When It Matters

Increasing charter school student engagement through two evidence-based strategies.

Each charter school and portfolio experiences unique challenges to provide high-quality learning opportunities and student engagement as evidenced by varying levels of success, chronic absenteeism, and declining enrollment. Competing priorities make it difficult for teams to get ahead of these issues and develop measurable goals that will help keep students engaged and schools on track for academic success.

Purpose

Developed by the National Charter Schools Institute, Momentum Strategy and Research, and WestEd, A-GAME: Measure What Matters is a community of education leaders dedicated to recognizing when schools are struggling and preventing school decline.

A-GAME brings together two strategies to reshape struggling schools’ trajectories: Indicators of Distress and Responsive Goals.

By proactively identifying schools in need before they’re labeled “low performing,” the Indicators of Distress early warning system ensures timely interventions, preventing prolonged limitations in opportunities for vulnerable students. Through Responsive Goals educators set goals aligned with their communities’ needs to foster supportive environments beyond academic metrics.

With early identification combined with community-powered oversight, A-GAME equips schools to prepare students for a promising future.

Audiences Served

By creating valuable resources and convening education leaders from charter authorizers, schools, boards, districts, and state education agencies, A-GAME facilitates the exchange of ideas while providing valuable time and space for participants to set measurable goals.

Project Activities

A-GAME provides text-based and multimedia resources, data dashboards, an online community, and on-demand learning through its Charter Network website.

Additionally, new and returning program participants are invited each year to A-GAME’s virtual and in-person convenings. During these events, participants can monitor progress on goals and engage in professional learning with A-GAME designers and facilitators.
