STEM Faculty 101 is a new online course designed to provide college instructors an introduction to the Reading Apprenticeship framework, its impact on student motivation and achievement, with an emphasis on participants’ practicing Reading Apprenticeship routines in the STEM classroom.

What You Will Learn

  • How to identify and leverage your own expertise reading the complex texts—including graphics—of your STEM discipline
  • How to build strong social/personal dimensions in the classroom to foster active learning environments in line with current research on conceptual learning in STEM
  • How to make metacognitive inquiry a standard classroom practice
  • How to foster learning dispositions of persistence, problem solving, and collaboration
  • How to step away from “delivering” content and move students toward independence
  • How to connect your deepening knowledge base of current research about discipline-specific literacies to texts you use with your own students
  • What other participants are discovering in their own classrooms
