Brent Jackson (they/he/him) is a Research Associate with the Mathematics team. Jackson’s professional experiences in mathematics education include teaching middle school mathematics and directing a California Mathematics and Science Partnership professional development project called Make the Way.
Jackson is a founding member of the California Action Network for Mathematics Equity and Excellent, a project of the California Mathematics Project. This statewide network of lesson study practitioners center issues of equity in the lesson study process by using networked improvement tools. One of the innovations from this network that Jackson is currently studying is the use of Equity Commentators.
Jackson is also the PI of a NCTM Classroom Research Grant in which they currently work with middle school mathematics teachers to study the implementation of Complex Instruction.
Jackson is currently completing a PhD at Michigan State University in Curriculum, Teaching, and Teacher Education. Jackson’s research has focused on supporting teacher learning in collaborative groups (i.e., lesson studies), particularly regarding issues of equity and collaborative learning. They are deeply interested in disrupting the ways gender is used as a construct in mathematics education research.
