Session: Policy Evaluation
Presentation: Improving Evidence on What Works: “The Regression Discontinuity Design”
Time: 8:00 a.m.–9:15 a.m.
Location: Lake Michigan, 8th Floor, Hilton Chicago
Session Code: 270
Description: There is a need for more rigorous evaluations of interventions to determine their impact on recidivism, crime rates, and other outcomes. While a randomized controlled trial is not always feasible, a regression discontinuity design (RDD) is a viable option under certain conditions to rigorously ascertain causal effects. However, there is a general lack of awareness of RDD and its potential applications to the justice area. In this paper, we will bring attention to RDD as a rigorous choice that should be used more often whenever possible to answer causal questions relevant to justice.
