As WestEd’s Senior Director of Development, Matthew N. Nathan is responsible for increasing the agency’s revenue, diversifying its funding sources, increasing its sustainability, and expanding the scale and impact of WestEd’s work.
Matthew works across the agency leading business development, strategic communications, and business planning activities designed to scale up WestEd’s evidence-based tools and services. He focuses particularly on increasing WestEd’s partnerships with state agencies and school districts, and on expanding WestEd’s national footprint and impact.
In addition, Matthew leads the development of new strategic partnerships to expand the agency’s core capacity, create synergy, and develop new channels for dissemination.
Prior to joining WestEd, Matthew had over two decades of experience in the education sector as a teacher, staff developer, entrepreneur, fundraiser, consultant, and grant maker. With experience building technology companies and professional services businesses, non-profit and for profit, Matthew’s most recent experience includes serving in strategic business development and marketing roles at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Teachscape, helping lead strategic marketing and sales leading to rapid revenue growth.
Matthew has served on the National Board of Directors for the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network and the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of the San Francisco Bay Area. He currently serves on the board of the Center for Progressive Education at Presidio Hill School in San Francisco.
He received a BA in government and philosophy from Bowdoin College.
