Salmon Fishing Curriculum Kit: Investigations into Probability
The mathematics in this module, designed for grades 6-7, is set in the context of the Yup’ik people’s subsistence and commercial fishing. Students will explore concepts such as theoretical and experimental probabilities, the law of large numbers, sample space, and equally and not equally likely events. The kit includes the teacher’s curriculum, two posters, and two CD-ROMs featuring an Excel template and Yup’ik glossary.
Salmon Fishing: Investigations into Probability is part of the Math in a Cultural Context series, a supplemental math curriculum based on the traditional wisdom and practices of the Yup’ik Eskimo people of southwest Alaska.
