Kevin King is a Senior Project Leader in WestEd’s Assessment Design and Development team and a co-lead for the State Science Assessment Solutions team.
Focusing on the intersection of content validity and technical quality, King provides content leadership for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) projects, including test design and item specifications, and is project director for other high-stakes assessment projects.
King was the Project Management Partner Liaison for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, providing direction and oversight for multiple contracts and work groups focused on item and test design, reporting, technology, administration, and accessibility.
Although King’s main expertise is in science, he has extensive experience in test design for all content areas, including social studies and English language acquisition. King has directly supported innovative assessment development for a range of state departments of education, including Washington, Delaware, Louisiana, and Massachusetts.
Prior to joining WestEd, King was the Assessment Development Director for the Utah State Board of Education. He oversaw all aspects of test development, including transitioning to computer-based testing and developing new testing strategies. In this role, King co chaired the Smarter Balanced Item Development Work Group, where he developed extensive knowledge of the Common Core State Standards.
A National Board Certified Teacher, King leverages nine years of science classroom experience and nine years of state office, large-scale assessment experience in all aspects of his current work.
King received an MEd in teaching and learning from the University of Utah, and a BS in biology from James Madison University.
