Our Approach
Throughout our work at WestEd, we employ a whole-person approach because we believe every child, youth, and adult should have a personal purpose, healthy relationships, a sense of civic engagement, a sense of place in the community, and success in school and the workplace. Our research consistently explores how different aspects of students’ experiences impact outcomes. These aspects include students’ physical and mental well-being as well as sense of belonging, connection, and safety.
Safe and Supportive Learning Environments
Children thrive when they learn and develop in environments that support their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being. Using research-based best practices, we offer technical assistance and professional learning, surveys and measures, product and resource creation, and research and evaluation.
Family and Community Engagement
Our family and community engagement services support school, district, and state partners in developing effective home-school-community partnerships that transform school culture and advance student learning and well-being.

Literacy
Valuing the contributions of both practice and research in improving literacy learning, we collaborate with districts, schools, and colleges to consistently realize equitable, measurable impacts on teacher practice and student outcomes.

Mathematics
School districts currently have access to an unprecedented infusion of funds to address the impact of the pandemic on math learning. Districts can invest Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) dollars in math tutoring, instructional materials, and other strategies that have the strongest evidence base to ensure student success in math.
Support for Principal Leadership
We offer professional learning and coaching support to site leaders and their teams with a focus on developing the technical and adaptive leadership skills necessary to lead effectively. Our approach to professional learning offers leaders the opportunity to apply research and custom tools and processes that are relevant and applicable to their context.
