What You Will Learn

Our institutes focus on important mathematics-specific pedagogical and facilitation skills, reflecting the most current research on adult learning and modeling a community of practice. As a participant, you will learn how to:

  • Build a repertoire of strategies and facilitation moves to achieve a quality mathematics professional learning program for teachers
  • Design mathematics professional development experiences to achieve specific goals and purposes
  • Deepen teachers’ mathematics content knowledge for today’s rigorous content standards
  • Manage effective mathematics discussions in professional development
  • Select and use worthwhile mathematical tasks that integrate the Standards for Mathematical Practice in professional development

  • Leaders of Mathematics Professional Development, K-12, including teachers working in leadership roles at their school or districtwide

Service Details

Learning to Lead Mathematics Professional Development Institutes are offered in two formats to accommodate your scheduling needs: National Institutes and On-Site Institutes. We also offer a Mathematics Leadership Seminar.

National Institutes

We hold four-day institutes at select locations across the country. Please contact us for more information on our upcoming institutes.

On-Site Institutes Hosted by Your Organization

On-site institutes with flexible dates are available for school or district teams of up to 35 people. The on-site institutes take place over six days, in three two-day seminars. The institute sessions are ideally scheduled over the period of three to four months to allow participants an opportunity to implement mathematics professional development in their own schools or districts between sessions.

Mathematics Leadership Seminar

The two-day seminar is tailored to address a specific client-identified need or interest within the areas of mathematics professional development design and facilitation. The seminar is available for up to 35 participants.

What Makes This Service Unique

The Learning to Lead Professional Development Institutes reflect the most current research on mathematics professional development, adult learning, and modeling a community of practice. Deepening teachers’ content knowledge is a priority in mathematics professional development and these institutes build leaders’ capacity to do so.

In addition to findings presented in an evaluation paper,* participants have reported that the institutes helped them:

  • Develop an understanding of the importance of clear goals for professional development
  • Learn a variety of strategies for managing the complexities of professional development
  • Develop a set of principles that guide decision-making in designing and implementing effective mathematics professional development

WestEd experts conduct these institutes and can also prepare site coordinators to facilitate these leadership institutes with their own groups.
